Ad Sales Mania Buy an Ad, Get a Cat?
By Carl Landau

My 15 minutes of fame has lasted for over 20 years. In the mid-eighties I ran an in-house ad in my nerdy Computer Language magazine titled, "Buy an Ad, Get a Cat."

To this day I get asked hundreds of times a year about "that cat thing". Since then I've been ripped off by my Camp Niche campers. "Buy an Ad" get a... horse, ant farm, brother-n-law, lobster. You name it and my wonderful attendees have stolen and substituted what they're hawking for my precious putty tat.

The Digital Oz
Let the Big Dogs Fight it Out!

By Ryan Dohrn

My wife and I raise AKC Pembroke Welsh Corgi dogs.  Don't know the breed?  They weigh less than 15lbs but think they are a Doberman on steroids -- agile and very quick to the punch.  Even if they lose in a fight for table scraps with a bigger dog, the big dog knows it's met its match.

And so goes the tale of big dog and niche publishers... While the top consumer mags fight for space online, niche publishers can shine bright with specialized content and specialized media that the big dogs only wish they had time to focus on.

Grand Poobah of the Month
White Paper Mania!

Hi Fellow Niche Publishers,

If you publish a technical or even slightly technical web site or online information portal, this one's a winner.

Housing "white papers" from my industry's vendors on our website is a consistent and low maintenance revenue stream I've found in my niche (I publish a web site and newsletter for Cable TV engineering execs - yes, "cable guys").  We've set up a "Holy Grail" of cable engineering information that's simple and profitable.  Our webmaster set up the service where a customer can "open" an account by signing up, then we allot 5mb of space to each account to upload and download white papers from their company from their own desktop - we never have to lift a finger. This gives us a rotating fresh batch of white papers, and twice a month our editor selects one specific paper and features it in a special "White Paper Watch" blurb.

The clients love it as they spend a lot of time to get their white papers written, the writer gets some extra love and exposure, and we charge a nice annual fee for the service. The ROI is huge because outlay is only the actual memory space on our server and the initial set up!

Good luck and Happy Niche-ing!

Emarketing tip of the month:
What's the big deal about segmentation?

Open rates for segmented versus non-segmented campaigns are as much as 20% higher on average for the first 30 days.
- MarketingSherpa "Email Marketing Benchmark Guide 2008" (2008)

The big deal about segmentation is... it works. Segmentation is the parsing of your recipient file based on like attributes and tailoring a message specific to those attributes. Here are the steps you need to take in order to start segmenting:

  1. Define how your consumers are different. This could be a long list of attributes that range from job title to purchasing habits to industry type.
  2. Add those attribute categories into your database. This works in excel just as much as it does in complicated CRM applications.
  3. Classify your consumers based on the attributes.
  4. Craft messages and call to actions tailored specifically to those segmented groups.
  5. Maintain your segmentations on a go forward basis.
